Welcome! This grassroots effort was created in response to all of the events over the past year in Purcellville, VA. As we approach the upcoming election, a group of citizens felt it critical to help educate and inform local voters about the candidate and issues that our town faces. We feel it is of utmost importance to provide factual information. Please note that this is an all volunteer effort and we all have day jobs. Troubling Times
Prior to, but especially since January 2025, our quaint little town has been negatively presented on multiple occasions in the media, even at the national level. Actions taken by town council under the leadership of Mayor Bertaut have caused division and distrust in our community. Town leadership has failed the residents by operating in a manner that is not consistent with transparency, sound governance, or fiscal responsibility.
Recalled and Suspended Public Officials
One of the most dramatic examples are the pending criminal felony charges against town Vice Mayor Carl “Ben” Nett and Former Mayor / Town Manager Kwasi Fraser. Indicted by grand jury, both individuals were charged by the Virginia Commonwealth’s Attorney for Commercial Bid Rigging and Fraud Against the Government.
Vice Mayor Nett also faces an additional four felony charges for Misuse of Official Police Databases. The state’s prosecutor accuses him of utilizing Town of Purcellville police database access in his role as a (former) Town of Purcellville Police Officer to obtain information about political opponents on town council and at least one private citizen.
Both Nett and Fraser have been suspended from their roles as public officials by court order, and Mr. Nett also was found by a jury to have committed violations of Virginia Conflict of Interest Laws and Town Policy and Procedures by “clear and convincing evidence.”
Lack of Process and Transparency
Among some of the most egregious violations, Mayor Bertaut along with the support of the majority council members (aka Team Mayberry), have hired two different town managers without any formal vetting and interview process, or the input from minority members of council. One of these hires is now suspended and being paid with taxpayer dollars. The other has prior established ties and friendship with now suspended Vice Mayor Nett.
Additionally, there is evidence that Mayor Bertaut and Council Members Nett, Luke, and Khalil have violated open meeting requirements, by conducting coordinated business of the council outside of formal hearings. This includes coming with prepared coordinated written statements on matters before council, and prearranging votes on matters that have been added at the last minute as special agenda items, all while excluding the minority members of council. The vote to disband the Purcellville Police Department is an excellent example of such coordinated activity.
